In the TV show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, one of the characters, Charlie, is lacking in almost any intelligence but as part of an ongoing bit, pretends to be a lawyer.

The UK has its own answer to Charlie in the form of Steven Barrett, a barrister and avid social media user who comments on various issues of the day in a way that would sound like parody if it wasn't so worryingly earnest.

Barrett pretends to be an independent mind when it comes to giving his unique interpretation of the law but hides the fact that he is a councillor for the Conservative Party and regularly accepts gigs for right-wing media outlets such as The Spectator and GB News.

If anyone on Twitter dares to challenge his approach or points out that he might not be as neutral as he makes out, then he is quick to hit the ‘Block’ button. It is a testament to his lack of expertise that by this point most of legal Twitter has been blocked by him.

In all honesty, I have avoided writing about Barrett up until now because he is such a ridiculous character. Even the way that he talks sounds like a pastiche of a barrister.

Now, however, it appears that he may have finally gone too far.
