How the Courts Backlog Affects Victims
The criminal justice system requires a delicate balance. Neither the defence nor the prosecution should be afforded any special advantage and the judge and/or jury should then decide the fate of the defendant from a position of neutrality.
Sadly that balance is being undermined. A government that has always wanted to appear tough on crime is not paying its prosecutors nearly enough and so many are now working on the criminal defence side instead. A 20% difference in fees means that there can be as many police on the street as you like but criminals are not ultimately being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
This wide disparity has been manufactured only recently.
