It is official. The next general election will be held on 4th July, several months earlier than many expected.
The parties will now gear up into campaign mode and we will hear a lot over the coming weeks about policy ideas that may shape the future of the country over the next five years.
Keir Starmer and the Labour Party will likely struggle to forge a true identity as their brand of centrist politics attracts little enthusiasm amongst the public, but they can probably rely on a desperate desire for change amongst the electorate.
Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives face an uphill challenge. They took a massive hit in local elections in May and their record over their time in government leaves a lot to be desired. Their argument will be for more time to follow through on key policy goals like the much-maligned Rwanda Scheme.
