Lords Push Back on Rwanda
Ahead of the budget last week, the Lord Chancellor said that the working assumption was that there would be a general election in autumn this year. However, given the way that things are going for the Conservative Party at the moment, this is already beginning to look optimistic.
Lee Anderson's defection to Nigel Farage's Reform UK party could well prompt similar moves from other disgruntled Tory MPs. Political reporting suggests that if the number of defections reaches double figures, then a snap election would be called before Sunak's premiership is destabilised even further.
All of this cements what has been a rather gloomy time for the government, compounded by 10 defeats in the House of Lords last week on the ill-fated Rwanda Bill.
