The first real challenge facing Rishi Sunak as prime minister is what to do about his Home Secretary.
On the surface the appointment of Suella Braverman made political sense. She is a continuation from the Boris Johnson government, was previously a leadership candidate in her own right, and has the support of the Eurosceptic ‘European Research Group’. As the Conservative party attempts to rally and unify before the next general election, her name made a lot of sense.
The problem is that Braverman is just not very competent as demonstrated by her time as Attorney General. Whether it was a car crash interview about the European Research Group or accusations that she faked contributions to a law textbook, some sort of drama always seemed to follow her around and undermined her suitability for office.
Rumours had always flown around Westminster that she was in office but not in power and that appears to have now been confirmed by the recent security scandal. After all, the focus of the stories might have been on Braverman using her personal email to send on an immigration proposal but a relevant question is: who was the intended recipient?
Who is pulling the strings from the back benches?
