The Raab Inquiry is in Motion
One of the many problems facing Boris Johnson and then Liz Truss during their time in Downing Street was the distractions caused by their ministers. Allies were appointed to key positions but then rocked the boat as a result of their own behaviour.
Now the third prime minister of 2022 is facing the same problem. Rishi Sunak promised integrity, professionalism and accountability from his premiership and that is already being put to the test because of allegations against the Secretary of State for Justice, Dominic Raab.
Raab is accused of bullying civil servants with many stating that they were scared to enter his office. Meanwhile Lord McDonald described the deputy prime minister as “abrasive and controlling”. In the passages of Westminster he is known as ‘The Incinerator’ for the way that he burns through employees and indeed is currently looking for new staff to run his private office.
In response to these allegations, Raab has taken the initiative and written to the prime minister, requesting an independent investigation.
It is, to be sure, a bold move but it leaves a lot of questions open.
