The Three Uncertainties Surrounding the Revocation Bill
Committee proceedings in Parliament are often assumed to be quite dry affairs and it is true that they do not capture headlines in the same way as Parliamentary debate but the expert evidence given to the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill Public Bill Committee today was the prompt for some heated debate.
I thought it might bubble over when one of the experts, Richard Benwell, was inappropriately accused by Nus Ghani MP of bias because he is a member of the Liberal Democrats but fortunately Benwell rose above it.
Indeed it was a tough time for the Conservative members of the committee as expert after expert pointed out holes in the Bill so that, by the end, this brain-child of Jacob Rees-Mogg looked more like a colander than a serious legislative proposal.
Whatever you think of the policy objective, it seems that the Bill itself has three main uncertainties that are cause for concern…
