What does "true justice" look like?
The random murders of three people in Nottingham last summer sent shockwaves around the country. Ian Coates, Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar all needlessly lost their lives as they went about their day.
The killer, Valdo Calocane, was caught but his sentencing this week left the families of the victims deeply unsatisfied. The mother of Barnaby Webber even went so far as to say that “true justice has not been served”.
Her ire was because instead of being sent to prison, Calocane received a hospital order following his guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
It is easy to sympathise but from a legal perspective, this was always likely to be the outcome of the case.
